Sophie Branson Gill Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Sophie Branson Gill and this is my fifth year at Burke Town School. I grew up outside of Boston, but spent every minute possible in Peacham from 2 weeks old to 30 (when I moved here permanently). I love Vermont and am so thrilled that I have found Burke and made it my home! I try to take advantage of all our beautiful North East Kingdom has to offer: swimming, camping, skiing, snow shoeing, and night-sky-viewing. I have two dogs, and hope to one day have cattle, horses and who knows what else! How did I become a teacher? I made the choice to make education my life during my junior year of college and never looked back. I have a degree in Psychology from Brown University and a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College. I have taught in New York City, Cambridge, Ma and now Burke, VT. My educational philosophy centers on the idea that children learn best when they feel safe, engaged and that they have choice. I also center all of my teaching around a child’s right to PLAY! In fact, we begin each day with Free Choice time and all of my academics are done through exploration and play. I strive to create an environment in which all children feel successful, invested, valued and challenged. I know that all children can be successful when given a rich, supportive environment and the opportunity to be a valued member of a learning community! - Sophie |
