Burke Town School Staff!

Hello, my name is Jill Bell.  I am excited to be returning to the Northeast Kingdom after being away for many years.  I grew up in North Concord, VT, I attended Concord school through eighth grade and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy.  I have spent the last 5 years teaching at the International School of Bangkok in Bangkok, Thailand.  Before that I taught one year in Doha, Qatar.  Prior to that I taught First grade for 10 years in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.  I have a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Colorado at Denver and I have received Reggio Emilia training in Reggio, Italy.  I love teaching this age group and can not wait to meet everyone.  Besides teaching first grade, I love to travel, ski, kayak, spend time with my family and enjoy the outdoors. I am looking forward to being a part of the Burke Town School community.

Hello, my name is Dale Guisinger. I am very excited to begin teaching middle school math at Burke Town School! I was previously a math teacher in Coventry, and attended Lyndon State College prior to that. I grew up in Charleston, VT and have spent most of my life living here in the Northeast Kingdom. When I'm not in school I enjoy spending time outdoors. You will likely find me hiking, swimming, skiing or snowboarding (depending on the season). I'm very passionate about mathematics and look forward to all of the learning we will do in the future.

Hello, My name is Sara Lewis I have lived in New York City as a music teacher, piano teacher and singer-songwriter for the past 7 years. I recently received my MA in Music Education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University. I am thrilled about moving back to Vermont, the same state I lived in for my undergraduate studies at Bennington College. I am looking forward to teaching music at the Burke & Sutton Schools for the 2017-2018 school year. My other interests include knitting, baking, yoga, hiking, running, and crafting.

Hola! My name is Carmenza Montague, the new Spanish teacher. I couldn’t be more excited to share with your children my beloved language and culture, we will surely have fun learning. Be ready to hear about ocarinas from Peru (an ancient flute made of clay), merengue (a popular dance from the Dominican Republic), el eclipse solar, burritos and guacamole, as well as the geography and history of Latin America and Spain. Don’t be surprised if the kids suddenly start speaking some Spanish at home too! As far as me, I am a native of Colombia with two children at Burke Town School who are bilingual, and a husband on the cloud (seriously! he is a web developer) who will soon feel the pressure to speed up his Spanish language acquisition. I love mountain biking, skiing, my flowers and garden, knitting, felting, sewing, music, fiestas (of course!—the more people the merrier), and will always be on the lookout for more things to learn.

Hi! My name is Courtney Murray and this will be my second year as part of the Burke Town middle school team. I graduated from the University of Vermont in 2011, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. I am currently working towards my Masters in Education: Curriculum and Development from Johnson State College. I love math and am passionate about teaching it. Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, and kayaking. During the summer my husband and I operate a food truck, which is really fun as well! I really enjoyed getting to know all the students last year, and am very excited for a fun and productive year to come.

Hello, my name is Chrissy Provost and I am so excited to join the BTS community this fall as the third grade humanities teacher. I grew up in Burlington, VT and attended Champlain College for Elementary Education with a concentration in literacy. Since I was in Kindergarten I knew that I wanted to be a teacher and as I went through school my passion for educating children and being another person for them to count on, grew stronger and stronger each year. I recently just got offered a spot on the board of the Vermont Council on Reading to represent the NEK and to strengthen my skills as a literacy teacher, in which I was honored to accept. In my free time I enjoy running, hiking, and practicing yoga. I also enjoy spending time with my finacé Ben and my bunny Lila at our apartment in St. Johnsbury. I am so excited to learn and grow this next year with the BTS community and have a meaningful and funl school year!

My name is Amelia Wurzburg, and I’m excited to be joining BTS as the 6th and 8th grade Humanities teacher! I grew up in the Northeast Kingdom, and after spending some time away,  I’m very happy to be back! This May, I received a master’s degree in middle school education from the University of Vermont. Prior to that I spent several years working with middle schoolers as an Environmental Educator in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as in the mountains and deserts of Wyoming and Utah. One of the many reasons I’m excited to be back in the beautiful NEK is that I love spending time outdoors- hiking, skiing, and trail running are some of my favorite pastimes. I also love cooking, reading, and hanging out with my new kitten, Ernie. I’m excited to be part of the BTS community, and can’t wait to get to know my students!

Odyssey of the Mind
VT State Competition
March 18th 2017

Twelve creative minds from 5th and 6th grade competed in the VT State Odyssey of the Mind Competition yesterday. Their collaboration, dedication, respectful nature, and persistence all shined through yesterday at competition.

The Odd-a-bot team created a simple, yet functional robot, that played an important role is a humorous retro-holiday themed performance. Of note from the judges was their well developed character's. This problem was defined by the head judge as the most difficult technical problem he has seen in his 20 years with Odyssey. In fact, only 3 teams in the state of VT even attempted this problem!
Burke's Odd-a-bot team placed 1st in their division!

The Superhero Cliffhanger team created a comical performance in which creativity was saved by a "secret superhero" from a mad doctor nemesis character. This was a popular theatrical problem. This team's overall placement will be released this week.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who donated materials (including PTO and Burklyn Arts), teacher's who supervised teams, and to 5/6 teachers for allowing students to miss class to add their final touches on Thursday. You help make this a successful experience for our students. ~Ms. Scanlon, 2017 Odyssey of the Mind Coach.

Hello everyone!
Last Friday, March 10th, five 7th graders participated in the Northeast Junior High District Festival. I'm sharing with you a video I took of the band and chorus that our students participated in! They had a fun day of music making and certainly grew as musicians!
